Right Choice: Physical Therapy or Surgery?

By: Martin Trouba

As people grow old, they begin to complain further of pains in their muscle groups and joints. They seem to stiffen up with age, and such routine activities as bending over for the morning paper can make them flinch.

Such pain can grip so fiercely that they are confident it begins deep in their bones. But the real reason of stiffness and soreness lies not in the joints or bones, in respect to examination at the Johns Hopkins Medical School, but in the muscles and connective tissues that move the joints.

The difficulty of inflexible joints and muscles is alike to the obscurity of opening and closing a gate because of a rarely used and rusty pivot that has become balky.

Thus, if people do not regularly be in motion their muscle groups and joints through their full ranges of motion, they lose some of their potential. That is why when these people will attempt to move a joint after a long time of immobility, they feel pain, and that discourages further use

Let’s say you have osteoarthritis - probably the most frequent disorder of muscular system. It is often treated with a surgical operation to clean out debris in the joint, using a miniature scope inserted straight into the knee. But more and more researches emphasize fact that the surgery works, but no better than other treatments. Dr. Kalousek is a rheumatologist from Spa-resorts.cz points out - surgery doesn't stop the arthritic process.

Interestingly American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) encourages patients to consider physical therapy as an effective non-surgical option for treatment of osteoarthritis.

Doctor Kalousek believes that beside healing therapy & rehabilitation everyone can protect joints from osteoarthritis or slow its progression simply by following suggestions:

-Lose weight. Just remember that every kilogram lost reduces the load exerted on the knee for each step by 4 pound. So become a healthy eater!

Being a healthy eater needs you to grow to be both educated and clever about what healthy consumption in fact is. Being foodstuff clever isn't about learning to calculate grams or fat, or is it about learning labels and counting energy.

Healthy eating is all about sensible and reasonable consumption, consisting of healthy meals at the least 3 times every day. Healthy eaters eat many different types of foods, not restraining themselves to single specific foodstuff kind or food set.

-Get active. Training strengthens the muscles around joints, which can stop cartilage from wearing down.

-Stay straight. Good posture protects the neck, back, hip and knee joints.

-Don't stay immobile when sitting. Switching positions can reduce joint and muscle stiffness.

-Lift cautiously. Use your strongest & biggest joints and muscles when lifting or carrying to avoid straining smaller joints.

-Break it up. Rest between phases of heavy activity to prevent repetitive stress on joints that can accelerate wear and tear.

In other words non-surgical therapy is a good option of surgical operation in many cases!
