Rising Candle Fundraising Costs

Candle fundraisers are the latest casualty of rising costs in the fundraising industry.
For years candle fundraisers were a mainstay of fundraising. Most every house in America had candles in one or more rooms. People loved to use them and people loved to give them as gifts. Selling candles for a fundraiser became a natural.
At one time there were so many candle fundraising companies you could choose from. They offered many gimmicky products. They offered a huge selection of sizes and a great assortment of containers.
But now candle manufacturers are being hit with price increases that many have never seen before. In fact the owner of a candle fundraising company told me he has been making candle for more than 25 years and has never seen raw material prices rise so fast.
Besides raw materials increasing in prices the manufacturers found the cost of the containers they used was also rising. And it didn't matter if the candles came in small tins or in glass. The prices were rising.
The third whammy to hit them was the rising cost of freight. Candles by nature weigh a lot of the cost of shipping them obviously increased tremendously as the price of diesel and fuel increased.
More and more we are hearing that the margin requirements for a candle company to sell through the fundraising distribution channel is too burdensome to continue. Many have already left the industry and many more are on the verge of making that decision.
The days of the candle fundraiser have certainly not ended. But the industry has shrunk and will probably continue to shrink.
