Shopping for engagement rings on the internet

By: Joule Delvis Allestair

When you buy precious metals and stones from any source, whether from an internet store or a high street shop, one of the main concerns is the quality of materials that have been used to make the piece you are interested in. Fortunately in the United Kingdom there are four Assay Offices which inspect gold, silver and platinum articles and stamp them when they are satisfied of their authenticity.
This means people can be sure that any metals that carry a hallmark from one of these offices are genuine but what about the stones that are set in them? In the case of diamonds, which are the most popular gemstone used in the making of rings that are exchanged between partners intending to get married, as long as they are more than .30 of a carat in weight then they should come with a certificate which details various qualities such as the clarity, colour and cut of the stone.
Once you are satisfied that the online jeweller you have selected meets the above standards then it is time to look at the engagement rings they have to offer and choose a style that your partner will cherish for years to come. The type of metal and the size and cut of the stone are two of the main things to consider, as well as the shape of the ring itself. The style is down to personal preference whereas the size of diamond chosen will also be dependent on the amount of money that you wish to spend.
Because larger stones are much rarer, they do not increase in value by a linear amount. That is to say, a diamond that is twice the size of another one will cost more than twice as much. The fewer flaws there are in the stone, the more expensive it will be too.
As far as the metal in which the stone is set goes, there are both practical and financial considerations. Platinum for example, is more expensive than gold but it is much harder and therefore ideal for jewellery that is going to be worn on a daily basis, hopefully for a lifetime. If you prefer gold then do bear in mind that the more pure it is, the softer it is, so 24 carat gold will scratch more easily than 18 carat gold.
