Shower Curtain Washing Advice

By: Marie Riggs

You would think that with all the soap and hot water, your shower curtains would be clean. The damp conditions and the soap that builds up makes this a major cleaning chore.

Soap scum and soap film on shower curtains is not a pretty picture. But there is an easy way to remove it. Place the shower curtain in the washer with a few large towels.

Skin plus your bar of soap equals scummy residue. Add hard water, and you have a real messy problem on your hands. It's the bar soap that is to blame. Consider using body wash, as it will not leave the scummy deposits on your shower curtain and walls.

Clean your plastic curtains and make them look like new by adding your curtains along with a few white or colorfast towels or blankets along with a capful of your favorite detergent and 1 cup of bleach. Wash on the warm or hot cycle.

To clean your fabric shower curtains, take them down by unclipping the rings connecting it to the rod, and simply toss it into the washing machine with 1 cup of baking soda. Wash through 1 complete washing cycle in warm or hot water, or read the manufacturers' instructions for details specific to your brand and fabric material type.

Right after the final spin cycle, remove the curtains from the clothes washer and shake gently to remove any excess water. Replace them by hanging them back up on the curtain rod to dry. The effect of gravity, along with the hot steam for the shower or bath will remove any wrinkles which will disappear within a day or so.
