Simple Health Risks - That Can Grow into More Complicated Problems -Can Start with Bare Feet

By: John H Fernandez

Not having any shoes to wear at all is a hard concept to realize, especially when you might have lots of shoes. The average man has 7 pairs of shoes; the average woman has 20 pairs of shoes.
That makes you think (and not just how many different kinds of shoes men and women need, versus have, because wow, 20 pairs of shoes?) because some people – including children – don’t have any shoes at all.
In fact, an estimated 300 million children do not have any shoes to wear, according to the Sole for Souls directions report. And every year, nearly 10 million kids in other countries die from preventable causes, according to UNICEF.

One other thing – those 10 million children are all under the age of five.
Every day, without a pair of shoes, small children have to walk on dirt roads, glass, oil, metal and all sorts of debris. And you run the risk of cutting your feet and getting hurt or sick because you don’t have shoes to wear to protect their feet.
In addition, according to a Public Citizen’s report, not having a pair of shoes on at all increases the risk of falling. Falling into dirt, glass, oil, metal and all sorts of debris isn’t great for health, either.

All around the world, children don’t have shoes to wear and are at risk for infection, even kids in the U.S.

Blake Mycoskie discovered this on a trip to Argentina and decided to do something about it.
While on his trip, Blake Mycoskie noticed that several people – mostly children – didn’t have any Alpargatas, traditional Argentine shoes, to wear.
Seeing the conditions and children firsthand made Blake Mycoskie want to help. So he formed TOMS Shoes.
Mycoskie became the Chief Shoe Giver of TOMS Shoes Inc. and simultaneously started the One for One Movement. TOMS sells canvas shoes based on the Alpargata, traditional shoes in Argentina. Their look, style and comfort level appeal to consumers, making it easy for them to buy them. And once bought, the One for One Movement kicks in – for every pair of TOMS that’s sold, TOMS gives a pair to a child without shoes. So far, more than 140,000 pairs of shoes have been given to children – in just three years.
It’s almost the end of 2009, which is when TOMS will give 300,000 pairs of shoes to children in need all around the world, without 300,000 orders.
After accomplishing that, TOMS is well on its way to accomplishing just about anything. Kids without shoes everywhere will soon have shoes. Don’t worry kids, Blake Mycoskie is working for you.
