Six Sigma organizational structure

By: Roberto Garabell

Six Sigma is a quality enhancement program for the overall benefits accruing to the organizations. Adoption of Six Sigma is going to play a major re-shuffle in the organizational structure.

However there is no predefined format of organizational structure which can be adopted by an organization going for Six Sigma. The needs of the organization have to be studied in depth and keeping the existing structure of the organization in mind an optimal structure for implementing Six Sigma needs to be evolved.
Responsibilities and Roles in the new structure.

Quality Leader or Manager (also called QL/QM) - The quality leader's is directly reporting to the CEO and has independent responsibility to assess the needs of the organization’s customers and assessment of ways and means to improve the effectiveness of the functioning of the processes practiced in the organization.

Master Black Belt (MBB) – Usually they are given a specific area or functional area of a business to look after. MBBs work in tandem with the process owners in order to ensure that the quality objectives under Six Sigma and targets are properly set, the plans are properly determined, and their progress is regularly tracked, and necessary education and training is available on demand.

Process Owner (PO) – They are the ones who are responsible for a outcome from a specific process. For example, in the any department there is one person who is in charge usually the departmental head, so under Six Sigma he is the process owner. The responsibility of any process makes a person the process owner.

Black Belt (BB) – They are the heart and soul of any Six Sigma initiative. Their main responsibility is to be the leaders in quality projects to ensure the projects are fully implemented. Black Belts also provide training to the Green Belts on their ongoing projects.

Green Belt (GB) – They are grass root level employees trained in Six Sigma who spend a lot of their time and energy in completing the Six Sigma projects, all the while doing their regular jobs.

As the Six Sigma implementation evolves, the Six Sigma methodology will penetrate their daily activities will become the way they work at al times.
