So How Does Sports Activity And Psychology Are Relevant

By: Roger Williams

A sportsman on the field has to deal with the excitement and even the nervousness at times. These situations are an inherent part of any player. However, in such times, the practice that a sportsman puts into his game speaks for how he handles himself. Even more important is the kind of character he displays. It is difficult to think straight with the crowds going crazy and the rival teams planning to counterfeit every one of your move. Thus, keeping a sane mind is what is utmost important here. Hence, psychology has influenced many aspects of the game!

Achieving the impossible - Impossible is an over rated word. There are few people who have tried doing the impossible. However, every challenge that a sports person faces propels them to push ahead and break the records that have been set by others. This psychology is what keeps players ahead.

Ever-powering hunger to become successful - It is a fact that after a certain point of time in your career, you do not have to prove yourself to anyone. Veteran players like Micheal Phelps and Vishwanathan Anand fall into this category. However, you can still find them play an amazing game. They get better with age. They do this with their undiminished hunger to compete and succeed.

The game is what matters - At the height of their career, many sportsmen have lost their focus and ventured into other stuff that has proven detrimental for their game. Business firms and companies approach these sportsmen to become brand ambassadors, and so on. Thus, any individual who has the balance, maturity and focus will understand that the game is the first priority and therefore, the concentration needs to lie there.

Courage to take up the game again - Mental stability and strength are core factors in helping a sportsman make a comeback from any kind of situation. Be it the fight with cancer for someone like Lance Armstrong or the complications of a tennis elbow for Sachin Tendulkar; their belief was what made them overcome the problems and glorified their game.

More often than not, the hype attached to the sport proves to be harmful to the individual. They steer towards dope, drugs and performance enhancing steroids, which ultimately ruins the spirit of the game. The recent smatterings of match fixing cases that come up almost every year prove how corrupt the attitude of the players has become. Thus, many players are advised to incorporate psychological tools like meditation and positive talks for self-motivation to help cope with stress.

The effect of psychology on any kind of sport is clear in the manner with which psychologists have been a constant feature on any good team. The members of the team also approach them whenever they need guidance to shrug off a bad form. These players also depend upon their family and friends for total belief and support.

The advent of psychology into the sports arena has helped many individuals in taking up a professional career in the sporting industry. Games are often strategized in the mind and simply put into practice on the field. These strategies also prove to be extremely beneficial for the game of life!
