Squeeze 500GB on your HD DVDs

By: Roberto Garabell

Disks with huge storage space (of 1GB or greater) aren't all that new lately. On the contrary, they are to become very popular in the near future. So what's so interesting regarding the Microholas project ?

Well they don't use new storage mediums, instead they make use of a revolutionary technology that writes data at a microholographic level using nanostructures within HD DVDs or Blu-Rays. So basically instead of using the disk's surface to write data, the new technology will use over 50 data-storing layers. This can be achieved by applying wavelength multiplexing techniques to multiple layer disks, trough which high density of data can be obtained.

The project was developed by The University of Berlin in partnership with the Budapest University of Technology and Economics and the Universita Politecnica delle Marche of Italy. Although they have managed to obtain a prototype that sores 'only' 500GB, they say the goal is to reach 1TB. Also the researchers say the new storage technology is not meant to be used for distributing games and/or movies, but more for storing data on longer periods of time.
