Take A Decluttering Challenge!

By: Marlee Dorst

It's another month, another week, another day... and it is time to set up the Declutter Challenge! Wouldn't you like to be able to come home to a clutter-free, orderly, peaceful house? Can you imagine cooking in a kitchen where all your utensils are in their correct spots, and where your countertops gleam and beg to be filled with home made cookies instead of clutter? Take the Decluttering Challenge today! Never heard of a Decluttering Challenge? Simply put, a Decluttering Challenge is a challenge you offer yourself (and/or your siblings and friends) to get a huge part of your home clutter-free in a particular time frame. And it WORKS!

The 30 Day Decluttering Challenge

One category of challenge is labeled the 30 Day Decluttering Challenge, and the idea is that on every one of the 30 days of the month you declutter one object or section of your house, big or small. The items can range from the bottom shelf in your bedroom closet to the media centre in your den, from your sock drawer to the stationery collection that gets hidden in the spare room closet. The bottom line is to be reasonable with your task assignment. Putting "put pictures taken in the last 4 years into photo albums" most likely won't be able to be done in a single day, but possibly "sort the photos into piles or envelopes by the event or child and dispose of photos you won't wish to keep" CAN be done!
As soon as your tasks are assigned, think about giving yourself a reward to look forward to as soon as your 30 Day Challenge ends victoriously! Yes, having a much less cluttered home will be a reward in itself, you most likely know that we tend to give more energy to our work if we have something tangible to win from our hard work!

The One Week Declutter Challenge

Another category of challenge will require you to reserve one entire week to your project. This will be a serious "no one can distract me" week during which you free your schedule with the objective of getting back what was once your clutter-free house. Assign yourself one area of the house for each day, close yourself within it so to speak, and go crazy! Garbage bags, boxes for donations and re-sell, and of course some standard cleaning supplies are going to be your necessities. Pull your significant other, your room-mate, or your children into the challenge! Many hands make light work, but also many hands make much clean!
Perhaps you'll see the need to cut back and go with a One Week Playroom Declutter Challenge, or a One Week Spare Room Decluttering Challenge. Don't worry about it! By committing yourself for 7 days (and seriously, what is 7 days in the grand scheme of life), and you'll certainly bring order back to a good part of your chaotic home!

The 2010 in 2010 Declutter Challenge

This kind of Decluttering Challenge is a very popular one this year. Commit yourself to decluttering (by throwing out, donating, or selling) 2010 things throughout the year 2010. Does that sound like a lot of stuff?? If you do the math though, it really is not as crazy as it sounds. 2010 divided into 365 days is merely 5.5 things every day. Look around you... the junk drawer, the cupboard in the basement, your office, the storage shed... that makes it seem more reasonable now, does it? Record your success on your calendar, and watch the clutter vanish!
Yet one more way one could do the 2010 Decluttering Challenge is to commit 2010 minutes specifically to decluttering! That's 33.5 hours.... An awful lot until you take into account that there are actually 8,760 hours in one year! This is less than one 45 minute session per week! BUT, 2010 minutes is enough to get a LOT clutter-free!

So, the "30 Day Declutter Challenge", the "One Week Declutter Challenge", and the "2010 in 2010 Declutter Challenge"... three amazing ways to start decluttering your home! Which challenge will you do?
