The Interesting Life Cycleof Fleas

By: Dovid Davis

Basic Facts About Flea Pests

Fleas are amongst the most important groups of insect parasites as they not only cause discomfort by biting,
but they also transmit several serious medical conditions. Cat fleas are seen all over the United States and the rest of the planet. Adults are about 1/8".
Cat fleas are wingless, and their form is flattened in a cross-wise direction, (side to side). Their color is brown to black.
Female fleas produce 4-8 eggs after each blood meal, During their total lifetime, they will lay somewhere between 400-500 eggs. Eggs are elliptical, whitish in color, and about 1/64" long. The babies ordinarily hatch in 1-12 days. Flea larvae eat natural garbage but almost all must have dried fecal blood so as to complete their development. The larvae do not bite, on the contrary they feed on blood which they find in adult feces. Furthermore, flea larvae have need of elevated relative humidity (45-95º:.)

Adults fleas generally commence to seek their initial blood meal on the day two after emergence, but they have the ability to live for several months on stored body fat.
Once fleas are on a host, they prefer to spend all of their time on that host, feeding, mating, in addition to laying eggs, unless, of course, they become removed. Although fleas have a preferred host, they will just as well bite people and can carry on via other
species as hosts. Depending on their environmental conditions fleas can continue to exist up to a year. It is crucial to keep in mind, that it is
not essential to have pets in the home in order to have fleas infesting the home. This is for the reason that fleas will frequently fall off their original host after a substantial blood mean. If a flea falls off a current host as the host is outside, then the flea will lay where it dropped until it finishes the meal. If a person should walk near the flea, after the flea has finished the meal, the flea will hop up onto the person, making the human being its subsequent host. Fleas can also lay dormant for lengthy durations of time. Accordingly if fleas have infested a habitat and the abode becomes inactive; for instance, lets say the people go on a lengthy holiday or the proprietor sells the residence, then the fleas will go inito hibernationi in the place where they fell off their last host. As soon as the previous or new family returns to the house, the fleas will be aroused from their hibernation and spring onto their new hosts. They will actually pick up their life cycle from where it left off. For this reason, a family buying a new home cannot assume that because the house has been unoccupied for a long time that there are no fleas.
