The Many Components of the Modern Gas Boiler

By: Byron Gram

Boiler components may be divided into parts that facilitate the flow of water, parts that facilitate the heating, parts that facilitate the release of gases and regulation of pressure inside the system and parts that are used to preserve a healthy chemical equilibrium in the tank.

Parts that are functionally related to the circulation of water in the boiler include the water feed valve, which controls the flow of fresh water into the tank, the feedwater check valve or clack valve, which has the ability to stop water flow in the water intake line, the supply line, which is the outflow pipe for heated water from the boiler to the house, a flow control valve, which regulates the rate at which hot water enters the circulatory system, the circulator plump, which facilitates water flow through the house, a low water cut off valve, which shuts off the boiler if the water drops to a critical level, a portion of the apparatus that is made of glass, and which allows monitoring of the internal water level and the return pipe allows the water to return to the boiler after it has circulated throughout the house.

Parts of the machine that are concerned with heating include, gas values and burners that regulate flow of gas into the combustion chamber, an electric switch that regulates the gas flow electrically, an Aquistat that regulates the boiler water temperature and an automatic blowdown/continuous heat recovery system that allows the boiler to blow down only when makeup water is being added to the system, so that the heat released through the blow down can be transferred to the makeup water.

Part of the boiler which regulate internal pressure include the pressure reducing valve, or pressure and temperature valve, which regulate the internal pressure of the boiler and pipe apparatus, the expansion tank, which permits expansion of the internal liquid and steam, as it heats, air vents or air bleeders, which automatically perge unwanted gas from the water in the boiler and transfer it via air scoops perger separators to the expansion tank or to the air bleed vent valve, the Vent chimney Boiler flue vent connector stack pipe, flue, which permits the escape of steam from the system and the Flash Tank, which regulates high pressure blow down, allowing it to safely enter a low pressure system or be vented to atmosphere.

Part of the tank which help preserve a healthy chemical equilibrium in the boiler include, filters installed in the feedwater system to remove impurities from the water and bottom blowout valves, found at the bottom of the boiler, which are used to remove solid particulate impurities that sink to the bottom of the boiler.
