The Versatile and Distinctive Citronella Ant

By: Dovid Davis

Citronella ants are relatively large ants, ranging in size up to 3/8th of an inch. They are generally a golden yellow color. Their characteristic trait is the odor they emanate, which is similar to the scent of citronella, hence their name. They are also nicknamed the "big yellow ant." This ant species produce winged swarmers. The female swarmers are golden yellow in color and the male swarmers are black.
Citronella ants prefer dwelling underground. Their nests are subterranean. They are a sweet loving ant and their favorite food is honeydew produced by aphids and other bugs. The honeydew producing insects in turn feed on tree roots and other pants, and turn this food into the sweet honeydew nectar.
Citronella ants live underground, however they do have a swarming stage, during which the winged sexually reproducing male and female swarmers enter buildings. The swarming occurs during the early and mid-spring, when the weather starts warming. The swarmers enter houses through various types of subterranean passageways including cracks in the foundation, heating vents or ducts, crawl spaces and any other opening into the house. The female swarmers are golden yellow in color, while the male swarmers are black. The entrance of Citronella swarmers into a house may be recognized by the strong citronella odor which the swarmers exude.

Actual citronella colonies are underneath the soil. However, the versatile ant uses a variety of objects to help form their colonies. They may incorporate rocks, logs or timber into the walls of their nests. Additionally they will seek out other loose or open subterranean environments such as mulched areas or spaces underneath foundation and or floor slabs.
