The history of backup

By: Roberto Garabell

After trying one of SoftLogica's products, I've stumbled upon this interesting article that presents the history of backup.

Written by Maxim Yurin, the article presents the history of the back-up activity from its early beginnings and until today. It basically reflects the reason why back-ups appeared at first and continues with the expansion and development of the whole process, as well as with various events and trends on the matter. Last but not least, the article points out the backup solutions and methods, along with their evolution. From punched cards and magnetic tape reels to emergence of network technologies with complex systems for remote backup storage.

At a glance, this is definitely not the average article you see everywhere. This is well documented, quoting references where it has to, linking to other Wikipedia articles where it cannot cover the topic enough, thus offering you all the information you need.

After reading it, you should know how the computer data backup sphere was created. You should understand how the information technologies and computer development lead to data loss accidents, and how the number of those types of accidents helped creating the backup sphere. This sphere has its own history that started in the beginning of the digital computers era and evolved along with various computer solutions (storage devices, network solutions, Internet), and today it still continues to grow very fast.

All these being said, I hereby repeat. Don't forget to back up your data as often as you can, because you don't know what can happen. ;)
