The nanobattery

By: Roberto Garabell

I think that today almost everyone of us has multiple electronic devices such as mobile phones, PDAs or laptops and one thing we have to keep an eye on is battery life. I mean we all found ourselves in a situation when we forgot to recharge one device or another and even if you recharge them on time, batteries have a pretty limited lifespan. Besides the batteries used today aren't as performmant as we'd want them to be, a laptop for example can only sustain itself for three hour or so, tops.

All these are problems that we face very day and of course that needs to be solved. And that's exactly what NASA is trying to do with they're nano battery project. First of all the 'nano' in nanobattery is there for a purpose and that's because for starters the battery will only be able to power nanoscale devices.

The main idea behind NASA's nanobattery is based on a protein named ferritin. It's an iron-based protein that has the interesting innate ability of storing an electric charge. So what they want to do is to place alternative layers of positive and negative charged ferritin and thus form a battery. As I was saying, for now things will be made at a nanoscale, but if the project proves to be successful later development could bring this technology directly to our gadgets and devices.
