If you're like most teens, you probably spend most of each school year trying to figure out what you're going to do during your summer break. You could be a lifeguard at the local pool or make money mowing lawns. You could spend some time doing summer reading or go to the mall with your friends. All of these activities are things you've done a thousand times before. This summer, consider doing something totally different. Consider doing a teen community service program abroad. There are a number of different companies and not all of them are created equal. There are a number of things you should ask yourself before choosing the right company.
1. How big do you want your travel group to be? Some companies send groups of 30, 40, even 50 students abroad at one time. This can be daunting for many people. Other companies are smaller and run programs with groups of 10-25. It's up to you to decide how large you want your group. Remember, the smaller the group, the more authentic your local experience will be.
2. Where do you want to go? This is a very important question to ask yourself when considering teen travel camps. Companies send teens all over the country and some even run programs all over the world. You could go to Asia, South America, the Caribbean, Australia? the list goes on. If you have always wanted to travel abroad, this is an easy and fun way to do so. If you prefer to stay close to home, many companies run excellent programs here in the United States.
3. What kind of service do you want to do? Most teen community service programs do at least some construction work in communities. Some are exclusively designed to build new structures in towns and villages with very little time spent doing other activities. Others promote education, apprenticeships, and health workshops. Take some time to ask yourself what you would like to spend your time doing on your trip.
4. Where do you want to live? Program living conditions vary greatly. Some trips rent out hotels outside of the towns they are serving. This means nicer accommodations but less time spent bonding with local citizens. Other programs do home stays. You arrive and are hosted by a family from whatever region you are serving. You sleep in their home, eat meals with them, and probably leave your summer speaking their language pretty well! This is a great way to meet local people and practice your language skills. Some other programs are somewhere in between. They involve sleeping in hostels or community centers within the town they are serving. In this case, you will get to spend a great deal of time with your fellow teen volunteers but you will also get a chance to bond and spend time with the local community.
This is just the beginning of the decision making process. Deciding to do a teen travel camp is potentially life changing. Spend some time researching different companies and find the one that is right for you and your preferences. That way, you'll know what to expect and you can spend more time making memories to last a lifetime!
