Various ways to discipline your child

By: Jaime Veluz

An effective approach of disciplining children is significant to correct their negative manners. Although you may find enforcing the rules to be difficult you should be consistent with it. Otherwise, any form of discipline will not be as helpful as imposing the rules consistently.

There are many forms of child discipline. You may opt to use one form then another or you can use a combination of these methods. Perhaps, the significant thing here is that you choose based on what it does to your youngster. In choosing the right form of discipline it is not just crucial that you achieve what you aim -- that is that your youngster obeys you -- but it is also crucial to know the lasting effects of the kind of discipline you impart to your kid.

Scolding. Reprimanding a toddler as a way of disciplining kids is effective in making them recognize their fault. However if you will constantly just raise your voice without telling your youngster why is not as effective as otherwise. You will only lower his self-esteem. He will tend to follow you but will not understand what’s wrong and why. Hence, when reprimanding your children you should take the extra effort of explaining why it is wrong. That way you are helping him understand and identify which is right from wrong.

Spanking. Spanking or hitting the toddler at fault is an old method of toddler discipline. Physical punishment is no longer as often used as before. It is because there are other ways to effectively disciplining a toddler that does not involve inflicting pain. Moreover, it is hurtful not only to the kid but to the parent as well. Can you spank a toddler when he throws a fit? How about if you are in public places and you need to enforce your rules? Can you spank your toddler unmindful of the people around you? Similar to scolding, spanking can lower the self-esteem of your youngster, probably, much more damaging than scolding does. Hence, spanking as a way of disciplining children is largely not used in imposing the proper or right manners to kids.

Time outs. Sending your toddler off to a naughty chair or an isolated area such as the corner of your room to mull over his negative manners is what time out is all about. Time outs are preferred by many parents since they are restricting but not too hurtful to the kid's emotions and self-esteem. The youngster primarily has to realize his mistakes by isolating him at the corner for some minutes. This way, he is also trained to think critically and responsibly of his acts.

In disciplining children it is significant that you choose carefully the form of discipline you will apply to your youngster. Choose which you think will be most effective on your toddler in bringing out the best in him.
