Website and online marketing vs. TV marketing

By: 3Way Marketing

site vs. TV, which method is best. I have heard so many arguments over this topic in the previous month, that I determined to write about it. The one method (Television) has been around for ages, with many companies using this effectively. In the last ten years or so the internet has entered our lives and developed a fresh marketing , pr and advertising channel. Which is better? Which one yields superior results? This article will discuss the pros and con’s of every channel, highlighting the effectiveness of each one.

COST

WEBSITE
Online marketing through your internet site is a much more cost effective way to market. Typically there is a once off cost for your website and thereafter there are no real expenses, besides the negligible hosting cost. Besides the initial cost, there is an ongoing on-line marketing cost. This is the cost associated with PPC, Search engine optimization, Affiliates, or in certain cases the email marketing , pr and advertising cost. These expenses vary, and will be discussed further on in the articles.

Television
The expenses associated with Television marketing is much higher. There is a production cost and then there are expenses that go towards the Television stations. These are typically very high, depending on the time and station that you are marketing on.
From a cost perspective, using your site is a much more cost effective way to publicize!

MEASUREMENT
WEBSITE / ONLINE MARKETING
Online marketing , pr and advertising gives its advertiser the ability to measure every action that takes place online. Your ROI is highly measurable and track able. You can see how much budget has been spent and see the responses associated with this? This channel allows you to clearly understand you marketing initiatives and the response to your efforts

TV
Once you have spent your money on tv, it is much more difficult to understand the effect that your initiative has had. There is often no way to measure how lots of sales were made or what the direct response was to your advert.
From a measurement point of view online marketing is the more effective channel.

SEGMENTATION / ONLINE MARKETING
From an online perspective, you have the possibility to determine who sees your advert. You can determine via IP addresses where users are loging in from. You can also segment this geographically though Google tools.
The websites that you advertise on also give you an indication of readership. This further helps you segment your target market.

TV
Television also has the ability to segment the viewership. The programme that you watch and the time viewed helps TV marketers determine their target market.
Once again, online marketing has the edge.

ONLINE MARKETING
In the case of South Africa, there is almost 7 million online users, with a high number of competing sites for these users. The user base is limited to the availability of connectivity and the expenses associated with this.

TV
TV marketing has a much higher audience and there is also a smaller number of competing adverts due to the reason that one can only view one advert at a time. many more South Africans have access to a Television and thus is a very attractive form of advertising to reach mass markets.
In this case Television is more effective then online marketing.

Although this is not a comprehensive comparison, it highlights the impact that online marketing and pr is having on our economy and business. Watch the space, the world-wide-web will soon take over.
