Wedding Photographers: Choosing the best

By: Joseph Moran

Choosing the best photographer can be easy if you follow some tried and true rules along with a little common sense. The first thing to realize is that not everyone with a camera is a wedding photographer. In todays world you'll see ads on craigs list and other websites advertising wedding photographers for an astonishingly low fee and in some cases even free. Think about it. Why would any professional shoot your wedding free or even lose money on it? The answer is easy...they wouldn't. Professionals would not consider lowballing their fee to the point of not even covering their expenses. The ones you see advertising free, or very low rates are students or other amateurs with a camera and no experience. Can you save money by using a very inexperienced amateur? sure. Will you be satisfied with the results? Probably not.
Trust your most precious day with a professional who has made the investment in their equipment, learned the many ways to shoot a wedding and all the scenes involved and knows how to translate the raw images into proofs. Inquire as to the experience of the individual and by all means look at their past work and portfolio. You also want to make sure the individual knows how to conduct themselves in a church or wedding venue...you dont want someone firing flash units in your face at the ceremony or annoying your guests. A good experienced photographer will be as unobtrusive as possible and not tripping over you, your guests or the wedding officiants.
Lastly, you'll want to make sure of the timeliness of getting the images delivered after your wedding. An experienced photographer will make sure you get your images in a timely fashion and not just take your money and run. An experienced pro will be concerned with his reputation and go to great lengths to make sure you're happy both with his conduct and the finished images. There are many many ways to save on expenses for your wedding, but its up to you to decide if saving a few bucks in this area will be worth the potential nightmare of hiring the wrong photographer - after all, the photos from your wedding day will be your sweetest treasures for years to come.
