What information should you put on a identity bracelet

By: Steve Overton

Wearing Medical ID bracelets may save your life. And they are not only for older people. Anyone who has a medical condition and is taking certain medications that could be dangerous or interact with other medicines, or has a severe allergy to something should consider wearing an identity bracelet all the time. Medical ID bracelets come in many shapes, sizes, and styles and are fairly inexpensive when compared with the cost of one's life or health being damaged.
In choosing a design it is also worth considering what information you should put on a medical id bracelet . The minimum you should put on a bracelet is your medical condition. In an emergency this is the most important information that you can pass on to the medical personnel. Remember you may not be conscious and so they can't ask you questions. Some id bracelets are very simple and come pre-engraved with your medical condition e.g. diabetes, epilepsy, Allergic to penicillin, bees, foods or other medical conditions that can be considered life threatening or important for medical personnel to know in the event of the person needing treatment.
Secondly, your name and contact details. It is a common mistake when people are completing forms to include their own mobile phone number. Please take care and remember to put the phone number for your emergency contact. If space is limited and you cannot include the name of the contact then it is good practice to write "ICE : phone number". ICE is the worldwide acronym for In Case of Emergency and medical personnel are trained to look for this. If space permits add at least two ICE contacts.
If you are a resident in the UK and you wish to include your address on the medical alert bracelet then it is increasingly common to put your house number and your post code only. This overcomes the space limitation in trying to get the whole address on the bracelet and medical staff can look up your full address in minutes with this information.
In summary, an example of a medical id bracelet may then be
JOHN SMITH
DIABETIC TYPE 1
6 RG5 3DD UK
ICE 1; 0118 1234 1234
ICE 2: 07917 123 123
But no matter what type of medical identity bracelet a person decides on, if they have a serious medical condition or are taking certain medicines, any money spent might be a small cost and the little bit of money that saves their lives.
