WiTricity - wireless electricity ?

By: Roberto Garabell

We're all fond of our wireless devices, PDAs, phones, laptops, etc. and as things seem to become more and more mobile new technologies are required to keep up the pace. WiTricity is such a technology and it looks promising enough. In any case the idea it's not new since Nikola Tesla thought of it first during the 19th century, without any of chances of success obviously.

Now it's Marin Soljacic who tries to bring Tesla's dream to life. He and his team of scientists at MIT (John Joannopoulos, and Aristeidis Karalis) are working on a system based on resonance associated with electromagnetic waves. This will allow, at least in theory, devices equipped with special receivers to be powered without any wires. And they just might succeed. Lately Soljacic announced that they succeeded in powering a 60 watt light bulb that wasn't plugged in.

So if we are to believe Soljacic's vision, in few years not only we will benefit from wireless Internet connections on the streets of our towns, but we will never run out of batteries ever again. Sounds tempting, eh?
