Writing children's books - Ideas for starting your children's book.

By: Phil Marston

When writing children's books, starting the process of writing is definitely one of the hardest steps in the whole process. You have no doubt convinced your self that your idea for a book is definitely a winner, and now you just need to convert that inspiration into reality. But to be able to achieve that you will actually have to write it! This is where you often invent any number of reasons for not starting it "just yet".
So, what is the best way to go about it? Well, listed here are a few ideas to help you get started.

1. Establish what's preventing you making a start.
Take a few moments and consider this. Make a list. Is it Work commitments? Family commitments? Social commitments? Possibly you are surrounded by distractions, or perhaps you just cannot stay focused?
There is one easy approach to handle this - lock yourself away. This is a crucial approach. Block out at the very least 3 hours of your time and let everybody know you can't be interrupted. Then take away all types of interruption - switch off your mobile, your house phone, your e-mail and anything else that may interrupt you.
Writing children's books involves commitment and the most important factor you can commit is your time. If you want your children's book to become a reality you have to do this.

2. Have a plan
Set your self some goals. Say to your self 'This week I'll finish the outline for my book.' This may seem daunting, but if you commit yourself to doing it you will be pleased with your self when it comes true. But don't stop there, make sure that you now set the next specific target, and have a series of additional targets either written down (ideally), or at least, in mind.

3. Maintain a diary of success
On a daily basis write a quick sentence saying what you've accomplished, then you'll have a tangible record in your hands and verification that you are really making progress. Read through your journal at regular intervals, especially if you're discovering it difficult to keep focused.

4. If everything else fails
If you just can't get started or are suffering from author's block there may be one method that may help. Just write! Have a clean piece of paper on your desk and just begin writing - anything. It may be gibberish to start with but it'll start the inventive process and you'll be astounded how quickly your writing gets on track and your book gets started.

With any luck this short article may have imparted some thoughts and inspiration for starting that much anticipated children's book.

I wish you every success in your future career as a children's book writer.
