You Know Your Business relies on Computer Parts When...

By: Roberto Garabell

You know you work in the innovative computer and electronics industry when:

Vendors run screaming from the room when they see how complex your design is.

Mil spec or ISO? Your drawings call out both, and a few other acronyms no one else has heard of. Profit? What is that?

Purchase orders come with the understanding that specs will change next month and system requirements will change with the seasons.

You sign Engineering Change Notices in blood, because they are too painful to change.

Your product has to be six-sigma quality just to get anything that works.

If you told your neighbors that your company built UFOs. Extra points if they believe you.

You cannot tell the kids what you do for a living, even if you knew what you did.

Only your customer knows what the product actually does.

You've worked at the same facility for 10 years, for the same project, although it has had five different acronyms.

You watch CSI and wonder if someone leaked to the writers what you are working with on a daily basis.

You interrupt a one-hour debate over the expected results of a software test that actually takes five minutes to run because you ran the 5-minute test for them.

You have to build your own test equipment to test the computer products because no one else has what you need.

Bonus points if you can build your own test equipment in house.

If everyone sees your company as the best beta tester, because you have a strategy of how to solve the most complex problems building your own products.

If your company attracts geeks for the complexity of their problems.

If inventors come to you to build what others said could not be built

If someone needs to connect devices 30 years apart in technology and come to you for a solution

If solving glitches with your products has ever earned someone a Master’s Degree of Engineering, a Bachelor’s Degree in any science or a Nobel Prize.

If the products that you build are complex enough to look like special effects props for the movies.

If you have a device in the building that rivals a supercomputer. Extra points if it is smaller than a toaster.

All jokes aside, the Computer Parts and electronic industry has unique challenges that are not all that funny. The electronic and computer industry can be very challenging, and finding the parts that you need to work with can be a challenge within itself. The key thing is to connect with a supplier who can provide you those hard to find computer parts when you need them. Even from random part codes such as 373211-001
